Description

Adult Psychiatric RN — 26 Beds

Requirements

  • 1+ year of Psych RN experience
  • 6+ months of prior medical/surgical experience (MS, Tele, PCU, ICU, ER, etc.)
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS required
  • BSN preferred
  • CPI preferred; facility can provide on-site CPI training
  • First-time travelers accepted

Patient Population

  • Adults 18+
  • Schizophrenia, bipolar, schizoaffective disorder, depression, borderline personality disorder, substance abuse, and intellectually challenged patients
  • Patients are medically stable
  • No detox or rehab patients on this unit
  • Admissions primarily from the ER

Staffing

  • Days: 4 RNs, approximately 1:6–7
  • Nights: 3 RNs, approximately 1:8
  • PCTs: 5 days / 5 evenings / 3 nights
  • Charge/ANCC coverage 24/7

Clinical Duties

  • No routine IVs
  • IM injections and phlebotomy may be required
  • Blood glucose checks
  • 1:1 observation when needed
  • RNs may manage CPAP/BiPAP; training available
  • No telemetry
  • Physical restraints are avoided when possible; CPI de-escalation is emphasized

Schedule

  • Days: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
  • Nights: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend
  • May be required to work 2–3 holidays/year
  • No regular call/standby
  • Travelers are expected to remain flexible; block scheduling is not guaranteed

Floating

  • Travelers are first to float
  • May float to adult or adolescent psych units
  • Generally not floated to psych emergency/crisis, acute-phase 5-bed, detox, or rehab units

Orientation

  • 2–4 days with a preceptor
  • Orientation to multiple units to prepare for floating
