Description

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of ED experience
  • ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS, and TNCC
  • Driver’s license required at submission to verify the 50-mile distance requirement
  • Must pass an open-book skills exam during orientation with 90% or higher; failure results in contract termination

Patient care and support

  • Ratio: 1:4
  • Patients: Abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, chest pain, sepsis, stroke rule-outs, and injuries/trauma, often fall-related
  • ER holds: Intermixed with ED patients and managed by ED nurses
  • Triage: Two triage bays; travelers typically do not serve as triage nurses
  • RN duties: Cardiac monitoring/strip interpretation, EKGs, and approximately 95% of lab draws; no monitor tech
  • Support: Physician with 1–3 midlevel providers, charge nurse/house supervisor, in-house security, and ED tech from 7 a.m.–3 a.m.
  • Respiratory care: Ventilator, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow capability; RT performs ABGs and breathing treatments

Schedule and other details

  • Weekends: Every third weekend
  • Holidays: One winter and one summer holiday annually; Easter rotates separately
  • On-call/standby: None
  • Floating: Pediatric ED only
  • Scrubs: Navy
