Description
OU Health Transplant Unit
Unit: Transplant MS/Stepdown
General Information:
o Beds: 26 Med Surg beds; 6 Stepdown beds
o Patient Types/Common Diagnoses: Kidney/Liver transplants. It is also common for us to take overflow of urology patients with continuous bladder irrigation.
o Patient Ratios: 5:1 MS, 3:1 SD
Support within the Department:
o CNAs: help with ADL’s, vital signs
o Receptionist/HUC 24/7
o Charge nurse – only takes patients when needed
o Phlebotomy? Midnight to 8 am, get transplant labs first thing in morning
o IV/VAT Team? Yes
o Resource Nurse available when staffing allows
o RT available 24/7
o Hospitalist? Transplant team available 24/, including physicians, PA’s, educators, NP’s
o Telemetry monitoring/tech: tele techs available
Required Certifications:
o RN License
o BLS, ACLS
Skills required: Experience with post-transplant patients (fresh transplants will mostly go to ICU first then transfer to this unit), comfortable lines, drains, NGT’s, antirejection medications, blood products, pain management, PCA pumps, CBI, and possible gtt titration
o Minimum Years of Experience: 3-5 preference (must have some experience in stepdown or PCU)
o Accepts first-time traveler: Yes-if have 3-5 years experience
o Must work independently and act as traditional traveler when not with preceptee due to didactic classes
Technology/Equipment:
o EMR: EPIC
o IV Pump: Plum 360
o Med dispensing: Pyxis
o Monitors: Philips
o Unit specific equipment: CO2 monitor in SD rooms
Floating: Occasionally to other MS/SD units if not with orientee
Orientation (facility and unit):
o Monday- RISE orientation, EPIC test out (if applicable), parking and badging.
o Tuesday- Clinical Orientation and checkoffs followed by Health Streams and online module completion.
o Thursday or Friday- full 12 hour orientation shift
o Will spend following week working independently on unit
Scheduling:
o Weekend rotation: 4 weekend shifts in 4-week period
o On call: No on call
o Holiday Expectations: Based on department needs
o Shift times: 645-715
o Schedule cycle: 4 week schedules posted 4 weeks in advance of 1 schedule day
o Scrub Color: Navy blue
o Parking: Dayshift- P12 with shuttle to campus, Nightshift- P1 attached to hospit
