Position: Surgical First Assistant / CST
Department: Main OR – Cost Center 72
Shift: 12-hour Days
Schedule: 3×12s, Friday/Saturday/Sunday, 7:00 AM–7:30 PM
Guaranteed: 36 hours/week
Contract: 13 weeks

Average Volume: ~28 cases/day + 5 add-ons

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year specialty experience
• 2–3 previous travel assignments required
• Ortho/Neuro experience preferred
• Must be experienced and proficient in orthopedic surgical assisting
• Will cover as CST as needed
• May float to outpatient surgery as needed

Required Certifications

• BLS – AHA verification
• CST certification – NBSTSA verification
• CSFA certification – NBSTSA verification
• CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assistant graduate
• BSN: Not required
• License to submit: Yes

Surgical Experience

Common cases include:

• Orthopedics / Total Joints
• Neuro / Spine
• Open fractures
• General Surgery
• ENT
• Scrubbing experience is a plus, but not specifically required for RN/First Assistant

Open Heart: Not performed
Vascular: Not currently, expected to begin later

Call Requirements

• Weeknight call: rotating
  • 7 PM–7 AM
  • 7 PM–11 PM
  • 11 PM–7 AM
• Weekend call: rotating
  • 7 AM–7 PM
  • 7 PM–7 AM
  • 7 PM–11 PM
  • 7 AM–7 AM
• Approximately 1×12-hour weekday call/week
• Approximately 1×24-hour weekend call/month, which may be split into two 12-hour shifts
• Holiday call as needed
• Call response time: 20 minutes
• If more than 20 minutes away while on call, the candidate must stay on-site

• OR ratio: 1:1
• Normally runs 7–8 ORs
• Typical staffing: 2 Techs : 1 RN
• Techs are responsible for room turnover because there are no OR aides/housekeeping
• Charge Nurse: Yes, 7 AM–7 PM

• RT: 24/7 in-house
• Pharmacy: 24/7 with Omnicell
• Anesthesia handles vent interpretation
• Scrubs are provided

Traveler Submission Requirements

• Candidate can be submitted to only 1 WVU position at a time
• Driver's license address must be more than 50 miles from the facility
• Previous permanent WVU employees must be gone 2 years
• Previous travelers who worked there for 1 full year must be gone 2 years
• Maximum 2 candidates per opening
• Travel teams must be submitted together
• Any license hits must be disclosed at submission

Orientation / Scheduling

• 3 shifts of orientation
• 8-, 10-, and 12-hour shifts exist, with varied start times
• Primarily days/evenings
• Travelers do not self-schedule
• Block scheduling may be allowed if it meets unit needs
• No routine floating, but may float to outpatient surgery as needed

Must-Haves

CSFA (NBSTSA) + CST (NBSTSA) + BLS AHA + 1 year specialty experience + 2–3 previous travel assignments + strong orthopedic assisting experience + ability to take call with a 20-minute response time.

Best candidate profile: Surgical First Assistant with strong Ortho/Total Joint + Neuro/Spine experience, current NBSTSA CSFA/CST, AHA BLS, and multiple completed travel assignments.
