Job Description 

Lumbee Group is recruiting a Cytopreparation Technician for an anticipated federal healthcare contract supporting the VA Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. 

The Cytopreparation Technician will support the preparation and processing of cytology specimens for microscopic examination. 

Responsibilities may include: 

  • Receive and verify cytology specimens and accompanying documentation.
  • Accession and record specimens in the laboratory system.
  • Process specimens such as:
    • Urine
    • Sputum
    • Fine needle aspirates
    • Brushings
    • Washings
  • Safely handle potentially infectious materials.
  • Perform cytopreparation techniques including:
    • Centrifugation
    • Smearing
    • Cell block preparation
    • Initial slide staining
    • Coverslipping
  • Examine prepared slides as needed to assess staining and preparation quality.
  • Take corrective action when specimen preparation quality is not satisfactory.
  • Maintain specimen accession logs and slide files.
  • Clean laboratory equipment and glassware.
  • Monitor reagents and laboratory supplies.
  • Perform minor instrument troubleshooting.
  • Process gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens using liquid-based cytology equipment. 

 

Requirements 

  • Appropriate previous experience in cytology specimen preparation or a related laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of cytopreparation methods and specimen handling.
  • Experience with laboratory safety and infectious-material handling.
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • No professional license is required.
  • No certification is required.
  • Must provide a current resume showing relevant experience.
  • Must reside within 75 miles of the Memphis VA Medical Center. 

 

Location: Memphis, TN – VA Medical Center Schedule: Various shifts available. Coverage may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and Federal holidays based on VA scheduling requirements. Contract length: 1 year with ext option, start april 1/ 2027 -Part-Time – approximately 1 day/week Pay: $28/hr Benefits: 10 days PTO, Accrued sick days, Paid Holidays, Health & welfare $5.42 (prorated based on hours worked)
