Job Breakdown – Histotechnologist (Histotech)

1. Position Details

• Position: Histotechnologist / Histotechnician
• Shift:Days/ Nights Available
• Shift Length: 8.5 hours, including any applicable break time as determined by the facility.
• Weekends: Not normally required; may be needed if four histotechnicians are unavailable during the week.

• On-call: None.

   

2. Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Histotech experience.
• Candidates must have relevant experience preparing and processing tissue samples for laboratory analysis.

3. Required Certification

• HT or HTL certification through ASCP is mandatory.
• ASCP certification documentation is required for submission.

4. Main Job Responsibilities

• Examine, fix, and process tissue samples to preserve them properly.
• Embed tissue samples in paraffin wax.
• Cut thin tissue sections using a microtome or cryostat.
• Mount tissue sections onto slides.
• Stain tissue samples to highlight abnormalities.
• Recognize factors affecting procedures and the quality of results.
• Take corrective action when procedures or results require it.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments.
• Manage laboratory supplies and quality-control procedures as needed.

5. Schedule and Weekend Requirements

• Regular schedule: Monday–Friday, 5:00 PM–1:30 AM.
• No regular weekend requirement is listed.
• Weekend coverage may be needed if four histotechnicians are unavailable during the week.
• No on-call requirement.
