PCU / Step-Down RN – Job Summary

• Unit: PCU / Critical Care Step-Down
• Shift: 12-hour nights, 6:45 PM–6:45 AM
• Schedule: 3 shifts per week
• Contract: 13 weeks
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
• Patient Ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients
• Beds: 14
• Charting System: Cerner
• Scrub Color: Navy blue
• BSN: Not required
• Travelers: First-time travelers accepted

Requirements

• 2–3 years of PCU or ICU step-down experience
• BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
• COVID vaccination required
• Experience with:
  • Arterial and CVP lines
  • Titrating IV drips and pressors
  • Precedex, dopamine, dobutamine, and Levophed
  • Trach care and stable ventilated patients

Patient Population

• ICU step-down patients
• Trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI)
• Major surgery and carotid endarterectomy (CEA)
• Sepsis patients

Schedule & Floating

• 3 shifts per week
• Every other weekend required
• Holidays follow the permanent staff rotation
• First to float to Telemetry or Med-Surg
• No on-call requirement
• Self-scheduling generally available
• One unit orientation shift

Important Notes

• Busy unit with frequent patient turnover.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and independent decision-making are essential.
• Familiarity with HCAHPS and core measures is important.
• Holiday time off may be considered but is not guaranteed.
• Hospital may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week contract
