Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Oncology Chemo Certified)

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position on a Medical-Surgical/Oncology unit primarily caring for medical-surgical patients with oncology history.
  • Night shift with target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6.
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED.
  • Call required if called off on a prescheduled shift.
  • Every other weekend required.
  • Contract staff expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments and may be required to work during catastrophic events, mass casualties, or disasters.
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings is required.
  • Unit census typically 42 patients; ratios may increase during high census periods.
  • Systems used: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR.
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts).
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and white.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg with Oncology experience)
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years
  • Prior Travel Experience: First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience NOT required).
  • Skills:
    • Experience in inpatient setting required.
    • Med/Surg nursing skills.
    • Colostomy care.
    • Accessing ports.
    • Blood product administration.
    • Central line blood draws.
    • Peripheral line care/management.
    • PICC line management.
    • Heparin and insulin administration.
    • Management of surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
    • Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management.
    • Isolation precautions.
    • Wound care including Wound Vac.
  • Certifications:
    • Oncology Certification (ONC) required (must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed).
    • BLS (Basic Life Support).

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification.
  • Charge nurse experience.
  • OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse).

Patient Diagnoses & Procedures

  • General medical-surgical diagnoses with oncology history.
  • Administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection.
  • Common patient conditions: AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain management, overdose, malignant neoplasms, ARF, encephalopathy, diabetic foot ulcers, heparin drips, etc.

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a passing score of 82% or higher within 72 hours of start.
  • Drug testing within 6 months of start required.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year required.
  • Flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
  • Physical exam, immunizations (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella), and other health documents required per standard travel healthcare protocols.
  • Background checks and education verifications required as per travel healthcare standards.
  • Must complete facility-specific orientation and training modules, including medication safety and confidentiality agreements.
  • Photo for badge required prior to start.
  • Must comply with hospital policies and mandatory education requirements.

Shift Details

  • Night shift.
  • Floating to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations as needed.
  • Call and weekend requirements as noted above.

This position is ideal for Med/Surg RNs with oncology experience who are comfortable working nights and flexible with floating and call requirements. Oncology chemo certification and the ability to administer chemotherapy are mandatory. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
