Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (CVPICU)
Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse for a travel/contract position in a 23-bed Cardiac ICU unit specializing in complex heart patients, including VAD and heart transplant cases. The unit is highly ranked nationally and regionally. The role involves working 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts with every other weekend required. Float duties include cardiac stepdown unit and PICU. Candidates with PICU RN experience will be trained on CVPICU.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Minimum 2 years of CVPICU experience, with CVPICU experience within the last year
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- PALS issued by American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Telemetry skills
- Ventilator management skills

- Care for complex cardiac patients including VAD and heart transplant programs
Important Notes
- IU Health will not allow Indiana RN licenses to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Periop/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (Periop includes ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- PICU RNs will be trained on CVPICU if needed.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Background checks including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and education verification
- Education verification and official transcripts/diplomas
- Physical exam within 12 months of start date
- Fit test for approved respirators within 12 months
- Immunizations and titers:
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted
- Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required, no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Preferred but not required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
- Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31), no declinations accepted
- Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exam
- Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
- References: Minimum 2 references from recent employment with appropriate supervisory titles
- Employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
Orientation & Training Requirements
- Completion of facility-specific orientation packets and compliance checklists prior to start
- Safety manual and HIPAA acknowledgment required
- Some units may require additional certifications or training modules (e.g., IU Health mandatory RRT modules for RRT candidates)
Additional Information
- Staffing ratios and float requirements may vary based on unit needs
- On-site fit testing available only as a last resort with limitations
- Candidates must complete all required documentation and certifications prior to start date
