Medical Surgical Nurse

Overview

  • Travel/contract role in Wilmington, North Carolina
  • 13–26 week assignment
  • Night shift, 4x12 hours
  • 36 or 48 hours accepted
  • Patient ratio: 1:5–6
  • Floating required
  • Weekend requirement: 12–16 per contract
  • Unit orientation: 24 hours
  • Hospital orientation begins in week one and attendance is required each day
  • Scrubs: Navy/White

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Med Surg / Telemetry (2 years of experience)
  • Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
  • Active BCLS certification
  • EKG testing must be passed before start
  • Accepts first-time travelers

Clinical Skills and Experience

  • Med/Surg and telemetry-remote monitoring
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Rapid Response Team use
  • IV insulin protocols
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line blood draw and PICC line management
  • Peripheral line care/management and starting IVs
  • Phlebotomy
  • Heparin and PCA
  • Chest tubes
  • CPAP/BiPAP and high-flow nasal cannula
  • Non-invasive airway management and oral suctioning
  • Oxygen delivery support
  • Isolation precautions
  • Wound care/wound vac
  • Colostomy care
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Pre/post hemodialysis management

Unit Setting

  • Typical medical-surgical diagnoses include dementia, diabetes, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, and hip fracture
  • COVID isolation area on the unit
  • Multi-level care includes stepdown patients, but those patients are cared for by stepdown staff rather than Med/Surg staff

Scheduling and Assignment Expectations

  • Schedule is based on unit needs
  • RTO after booking is not allowed
  • Additional RTO or call-offs may result in cancellation and DNR status
  • May be assigned to storm, hurricane, mass casualty, or disaster response coverage
  • Mid-contract consolidation to a centralized office may occur, with reassignment to units as needed

  • Must complete annual compliance and facility onboarding requirements before start
