ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 25 weeks
Job Overview
- Float pool position requiring ICU RNs to float across multiple units including ICUs, Transitional Care Units (TCUs), Emergency Department (ED), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Rotating 12-hour shifts (day and night) on a 4-week schedule cycle; shift may change depending on facility needs.
- Must be able to float to other facilities and departments within the system.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
- ICU experience within the last year
Shift Details
- 12-hour shifts, either day (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM) or night (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- 36 hours per week (3 shifts per week).
- Rotating schedule every 4 weeks.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Two supervisory references required, preferably from the most recent employment.
- Current and updated resume covering the last 7 years; gaps of 30+ days must be explained.
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.
- Verification of 7 years of work history required (third-party or in-house).
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, sex offender, and education verification.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including physician statement of fitness to work.
- Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, re-run every 2 years.
- Fit mask test within 1 year of start (specific approved masks required).
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years, no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
- Two negative TB tests (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-Spot) with specific timing requirements, or chest X-ray if positive TB history. Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required.
- Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or declination (declination must be signed within 1 year).
- Varicella: IGG titer or 2 vaccines required (history of disease not accepted).
- Seasonal flu vaccine or facility-specific declination required during flu season.
- COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy.
Training & Competency Requirements
- Pass/fail Telemetry exam on first day of orientation (2 attempts allowed, third requires manager approval).
- Medication and pharmacology competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher within 1 year of start.
- Unit-specific competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher within 12 months of start.
- Core training parts I, II, and III with passing scores of 80% or higher, updated annually.
- NIH Stroke Certification required for ED RNs.
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) may be required depending on unit.
- Completion of facility-specific learning modules prior to or on Day 1 of orientation.
Additional Important Information
- Must submit Return to Office (RTO) time at time of offer; late submissions will not be considered.
- Candidates must have completed references at time of submission.
- Pass/fail testing includes EKG and medication knowledge relevant to telemetry and critical care units.
- Parking and uniform policies must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start.
- COVID-19 preparedness and related questionnaires must be completed as required.
- Respirator medical evaluation and fit testing may be required for certain departments.
- Wage Benefit Parity form required pre-start for all clinical candidates.
- Cyber Security Awareness and HIPAA training with quizzes required before or during orientation.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with floating across multiple critical care and acute care units, possessing strong critical care skills and certifications, and able to work rotating 12-hour shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment.
