Registered Nurse (MS/Telemetry) - Travel/Contract in Columbus, Ohio
Job Overview
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Location: Columbus, Ohio
- Contract Length: 16 weeks
- Shift: Night shifts, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Unit: Medical-Surgical and Telemetry (MS/Tele) in a secure corrections health unit
- Patient Population:
- Oncology patients (active diagnoses and history) and non-oncology patients
- Includes solid tumors, hematology, surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis, pneumonia, abnormal labs
- Environment: Locked corrections unit with controlled access by Corrections Officers (CO)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:
- PCU: 1:3
- Medical-Surgical: 1:4-5
- Corrections Officer to Inmate Ratio: 1:2
- Float Requirement: Float to various Oncology Medical-Surgical units as needed
- Weekend shifts: Vary based on unit requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care on Oncology Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units
- Ensure staff safety in a secure corrections environment
- Manage patient care including telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
- Administer IV therapy, blood products, and manage central/peripheral lines including PICC lines
- Manage endocrine/metabolic protocols (IV insulin), feeding tubes, pre/post hemodialysis care
- Provide respiratory care including CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams: pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, rapid response teams, and transportation
- Use EPIC for documentation and Pyxis for medication management
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with recent experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system
Background and Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific code 3701.881)
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
- Education verification from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, THC, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- Annual completion of Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training and Ethics and Compliance policies
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment annually
- Unit-specific competency exams including medication and pharmacology competency
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually

Additional Notes
- Shift assignments may rotate between days and nights depending on department needs, reviewed every 4 weeks but not guaranteed
- The unit is a secure corrections environment requiring awareness of safety protocols
- Candidates must be prepared to float between Medical-Surgical and PCU units

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
