Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - MICU

Location: Battle Creek, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • No return to office (RTO) required in the first two weeks of assignment.
  • Pending Michigan nursing license acceptable with proof of application and estimated time of arrival.
  • Patient ratios vary by acuity:
    • ICU and PCU patients mix with ratios from 1:1 to 4:1 depending on acuity.
    • Ventilated patients typically 2:1.
    • High acuity patients (Cooling, CRRT) 1:1.
    • Med-Surg float with ratios approximately 1:5-7.
  • Weekend work every other weekend.
  • Floating required to other ICU and Med-Surg units as census fluctuates.
  • Patient diagnoses include COPD, encephalopathy, drug overdose, DKA, AKI, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.
  • Special procedures include CRRT, hemodialysis, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy placement, and chest tube placement.
  • Special equipment includes cooling machines, Bair Huggers, massive transfusion protocols, and CRRT.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan (pending MI license acceptable with proof of application).
  • Minimum 1+ year recent ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year.
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)
    • BLS (American Heart Association)
    • PALS (American Heart Association)
    • NRP
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • ENPC
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
    • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • Education: Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Clinical skills and experience including:
    • CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) and CVVHD
    • Hemodialysis (HD)
    • Arterial line (A-line) placement and management
    • Central venous catheter and PICC line care
    • Tracheostomy placement and care
    • GI surgery care
    • IV therapy including IV starts and blood product administration
    • Medication administration including continuous IV sedation, procedural sedation, emergency medications, and titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
    • Neurological care including CVA/acute stroke management
    • Respiratory care including ventilator management, BiPAP, CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, and suctioning
  • Additional competencies:
    • Chemotherapy (Chemo)
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM)
  • Ability to float to ICU and Med-Surg units.
  • Ability to work every other weekend.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search.
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
  • Michigan fingerprinting required within 45 days of start.
  • Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of prior Tdap vaccine)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 30 days of start
    • Annual TB questionnaire
    • Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (for candidates starting after Nov 1)
  • Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC).
  • Completion of medication and pharmacology competency exams within 1 year prior to assignment.
  • Completion of skills checklist annually.
  • Review and sign code of conduct and appearance standards policies.
  • References: One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
  • Complete application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.

Additional Information

  • Patient acuity and nurse-to-patient ratios vary; ICU patients may be held longer based on physician discretion.
  • Floating to med-surg units is part of the role.
  • Weekend work every other weekend.
  • First-time travel nurses are accepted.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a mixed ICU/PCU environment with a variety of patient diagnoses and acuity levels, requiring strong critical care nursing skills and flexibility to float between units.
