Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Work Details

  • 3x12 hour shifts, rotating between Day, Evening, and Night shifts (D/E/N rotation)
  • Schedule created in 6-week blocks, sent 2 weeks prior to start
  • Typically scheduled for one week on one shift, then switch the following week
  • Maximum of 2 on-call shifts per week, usually on scheduled workdays but may occasionally be separate
  • Travelers generally placed on night shifts for one week per 4-week schedule block
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Weekend work required
  • On-call required

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience working with Level 1 and Level 2 Trauma patients
  • Independent with craniotomy and endovascular cases in the Operating Room
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Pending license accepted
  • Must have a valid RN license for Connecticut (Primary Source Verification required within 30 days of start)

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification required; foreign equivalency report and diploma required for internationally educated RNs
  • Drug screening (10 panel) required within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
  • Annual TB questionnaire required
  • Required immunizations and titers: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (or declination), Tdap (highly preferred for certain specialties)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 1 - Mar 31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Competency & Training Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (must score 85%) within 12 months of start
  • Color blind testing required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024 (must score 80%)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain units (not required for OR)
  • Various facility-specific training modules and attestations required, including but not limited to:
    • Stroke Education (not required for pediatric specialties or NICU)
    • CLABSI Prevention
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Language Services
    • CAUTI Education (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • Blood Administration (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RN except Home Health)
    • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
    • eCart Training (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training

Additional Requirements

  • Must provide a 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU assignments (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain units (not typically applicable to OR RN)

  • Schedule is balanced to group off shifts together when possible

  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval

This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs comfortable with trauma and complex surgical cases, who are flexible with rotating shifts and on-call duties. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
