Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical / Telemetry

Job Overview

• Work on a Neuro Cardiac Unit specializing in Medical Surgical and Telemetry patients
• 12-hour day shifts, 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM
• Guaranteed 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
• Float assignments required within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
• Weekend requirement: 3 weekends every 6-week schedule
• Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
• No on-call or call-back duties

Patient Population

• Complex Med/Surg/Telemetry patients including:

  • Post cardiac catheterizations with interventions
  • CVA/TIA (stroke) patients
  • ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) patients
  • Complex abdominal surgeries (open bellies/colons)
  • Oncology patients
  • Post-operative day 2 craniotomy patients

Required Qualifications

• Current active compact Registered Nurse license
• AHA BLS certification
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Minimum 2 years of strong Medical Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience
• At least 1 prior travel assignment completed
• Trauma Level II experience
• Recent EPIC electronic charting experience (checkoff class required)
• Strong neuro assessment skills including NIHSS and dysphagia screening
• Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation skills (travelers must pass telemetry tests)
• Ability to initiate and titrate drips (e.g., insulin, cardiac medications, heparin)
• Experience with heart catheterization recovery (femoral and TR bands)
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills

Preferred Skills

• Experience with NG/PEG tubes
• Peripheral IV insertion
• Tikosyn administration
• Chest tube management

Unit Information

• 32-bed unit
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: Days 1:4-5 (rarely 1:6), Nights 1:6-7
• Charge nurses are proactive; clerical support is knowledgeable and helpful
• Navy blue scrubs required; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
• Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires
• Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins may result in termination

• No local candidates within a 40-mile radius accepted
• COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
• Orientation includes weekly sessions in June and July
• GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week; guaranteed set hours otherwise except during unit holidays when closed
