Unit Overview

• Pediatric progressive care / stepdown
• 11–20 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4, or 1:3 for post-renal transplant patients

• Pediatric renal/nephrology
• Post-operative spinal fusion
• Medical-surgical
• Telemetry
• Chronic complex care

Common Clinical Experience on the Unit

• General med-surg
• Neuroscience
• HemOnc
• Inpatient rehab
• Overflow
• Medical-psychiatric med-surg

Procedures and Equipment

• Telemetry interpretation
• Strict intake and output monitoring
• Lab monitoring
• Drain management
• Feeding tubes, including NG, GT, and PEG
• Gastric decompression tubes
• PCA pumps
• PICC and central lines
• Port access and care
• Syringe pumps
• Traction, halo, and pin care
• Wound vacs
• Suction and oxygen delivery
• Tracheostomy care
• Intermittent chest tube management
• CPAP/BiPAP
• Large-volume and syringe IV pumps
• Kangaroo pumps
• Vein finder
• Bladder scanner
• Point-of-care blood glucose monitoring

Required Qualifications

• Pediatric RN experience
• Basic telemetry interpretation
• Strong IV insertion skills
• Completion of BBP and med test before start

Preferred Experience

• PICC line care and management

Orientation

• 1 administrative education day
• 2 orientation shifts with an RN
• 1 week upon arrival, plus EMR class

Other Details

• Floating may be required to general med-surg, neuroscience, HemOnc, inpatient rehab, overflow, and medical-psychiatric med-surg areas
• Parking is available with a required parking pass
• Scrubs required
