Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN) – Alabama, Opelika
Job Details
- Specialty: Med Surg RN
- Location: Opelika, Alabama
- Shift: Nights
- Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit: Medical-Surgical (5T and 7T units)
- Bed Count: 5T: 34 beds; 7T: 36 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
- Weekend Requirement: 4 shifts per 4 weeks
- Holiday Requirement:
- 5T: 1 major and 2 minor holidays in winter
- 7T: Thanksgiving or Christmas plus New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, and one summer holiday (July 4th or Memorial Day)
- Floating: Required within the medical-surgical division
- Call/Standby: Not required for this position
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- 5T Unit: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
- 7T Unit: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Sepsis, Altered Mental Status (AMS), Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), Diabetes, COVID-19, Anemia, Weakness
Clinical Responsibilities & Equipment
- Drip Titration:
- 5T: No drip titration required
- 7T: Heparin titration allowed with pharmacist direction; set rate drips including Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Cardizem (stable doses)
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs: No telemetry techs on unit; RNs must be able to read cardiac strips
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- 5T: High flow oxygen, CPAP, BiPAP
- 7T: All oxygen modalities up to BiPAP; no ventilators
- Nurse Aides: Available, goal ratio ≤ 1:12
- Charge Nurse: May be assigned based on census or staffing needs
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation:
- 5T: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation
- 7T: One week of PCPO at education center plus two 12-hour shifts on assigned unit
- Scheduling:
- 5T: Modified self-scheduling
- 7T: Contract employees do not self-schedule; block scheduling accommodated when possible
Required Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required for both units
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – Required for 5T unit
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Alabama
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Additional Information
- Scrub Color: Ceil Blue (5T); not provided for 7T
- Radius Rule: Must be within 100 miles of the facility
