Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 48
Unit Overview
- 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
- House supervisor and charge nurse present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- Nurse aides/patient care techs support the unit with ratios around 1:9-12 depending on shift
- Telemetry monitors (Phillips brand) are used house-wide; nurses do not need to interpret strips
- Respiratory equipment includes high flow oxygen (rarely used, mostly stable COVID patients)
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has started
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT required (RNs must titrate drips)
- Must comply with drug-free workplace policy and produce a negative drug screen
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor; includes computer training
- Scheduling: 12-hour night shifts, typically 4 shifts per week (48 hours)
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts count as weekend)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- Floating: Participates in float rotation; if floated outside general unit, only assigned to skills nurse is competent in and paired with trained nurse
- No call or standby requirements
Work Environment & Policies
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Tattoos must be covered on duty; no piercings allowed except ears
- No scrub color requirement; scrubs not provided
Additional Notes
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
