Laboratory Technologist (MLT or MT) - Contract

Shift: Evenings with rotating weekends

Job Summary

The Laboratory Technologist works under supervision to perform laboratory tests and accurately report results for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. Responsibilities include assisting in laboratory operations, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance. After probation, the technologist may supervise waived, moderate, and high complexity testing.

Essential Job Functions

• Perform complex tests in hematology, immunohematology, immunology, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, and therapeutic drug monitoring following established protocols.
• Conduct phlebotomies including arterial, capillary, and venipunctures using age-appropriate criteria.
• Process specimens and maintain instruments through calibration, standardization, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Prepare and maintain reagent supplies.
• Validate and report test results accurately and timely.
• Assist in developing laboratory policies and procedures.
• Orient and teach students and new employees.
• Research and develop new procedures as assigned.
• Follow safety practices including biohazard handling, blood-borne pathogen exposure control, infection control, chemical hygiene, and hazard communication.
• Promote effective teamwork within and across departments.
• Attend required inservice education and stay informed on relevant updates.
• Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality, including flexibility to extend shifts when necessary.
• Perform duties safely and comply with all policies, procedures, and code of conduct.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS), with experience within the last year.
• Certification or eligibility for certification/registration as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) through AMT or ASCP.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related specialty from an accredited institution.
• Knowledge of medical technology principles, methods, materials, equipment, and techniques.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds independently.
• Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 and color vision required.
• Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend frequently.
• Fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary for job functions.
• Ability to work in limited space with frequent interruptions.
• Adaptability to temperature variations and moderate noise from laboratory equipment.

Exposure Risk

• Category I: Risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Quality Improvement & Compliance

• Maintain current knowledge of quality improvement programs and participate in departmental and hospital-wide activities.
• Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Follow compliance, privacy, and security policies and report any concerns appropriately.

Additional Information

• Evening shift with rotating weekends.
• Prior travel experience is not specified or required.
