Infection Preventionist - Contract Position
Location: Sitka, Alaska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours per Week: 40
Job Summary
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for surveillance, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). The role includes monitoring reportable conditions, educating staff on infection prevention, and developing policies to ensure compliance with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, CDC, FDA). The IP supports a comprehensive infection prevention and control program, collaborates with performance improvement teams, and provides education to staff, patients, and visitors. Travel within the service area is required to assess, educate, and train.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, maintain, and update infection prevention and control plans and programs aligned with regulatory agencies and best practices.
- Write, approve, and implement policies and procedures supporting infection prevention initiatives using CDC, OSHA, FDA, TJC, and APIC guidelines.
- Collect, trend, and maintain infection control data and statistical reports; report to regulatory agencies such as the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
- Provide infection prevention support and resources across all areas of the healthcare system.
- Serve as an expert resource on infection prevention, staying current with literature and best practices.
- Facilitate and promote infection prevention education and training for staff, patients, families, and communities.
- Conduct new employee and annual infection prevention orientation and training.
- Serve as a liaison and role model for infection prevention, maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders.
- Co-chair the Infection Prevention and Control Committee and participate in other committees as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, Microbiology).
- Certification in Infection Control (CIC) is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification current.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in acute care infection control and/or data collection, performance improvement, or risk management.
- Experience with basic statistics and epidemiological principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., MPH, MSN).
- Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).
- Experience in long-term care infection prevention and control.
Additional Information
- Flu vaccine is required.
- Travel within the service area to multiple sites is required.
- Applicants must live at least 50 miles away from the worksite.
- Housing and flights are not provided.
- Shift details will be discussed during the interview.
