Job Opportunity: RN Step Down - Stroke Unit

Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Long-Term Assignment (LTA)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Dedicated Stroke Unit
  • 30 beds
  • Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4
  • Patient conditions include: Medical, DKA, Cardiac, GI, Renal, Sepsis, Trauma, Surgery

Required Credentials & Certifications

  • Licenses:

    • Current nursing license with primary source verification within 30 days prior to start
    • Nursys verification within 30 days prior to start
    • Driver’s License/State ID (must be current and match address requirements)
  • Certifications:

    • BLS (AHA required)
    • ACLS (AHA required)
    • NIH Certification (Group A yearly, Groups B-F every 2 years)
  • Exams & Testing:

    • Ascension Pharmacology Exam (minimum 80%, 2 attempts max)
    • Ascension Medical Surgical Exam (minimum 80%, 2 attempts max)
    • Ascension EKG Exam (minimum 80%, 2 attempts max, latest edition required)
    • Ascension Core Competencies (HIPAA, Joint Commission NPSG, OSHA; minimum 80%, 2 attempts max)
    • Ascension Skills Checklist (clinical specialty, updated annually)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Influenza Vaccine or approved exemption (mask required if exempt during flu season Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • MMR: Proof of two vaccines or positive titer; no declinations accepted
  • Varicella: Proof of two vaccines, immunity, or history; no declinations accepted
  • Tdap: Valid within 10 years; no declinations accepted
  • Hepatitis B: Vaccination series completion or signed declination
  • Fit Test: Required for all travelers; preferred prior to start, can be done onsite
  • 2 Step PPD or IGRA (Quantiferon/Tspot) with annual TB questionnaire
  • Positive PPD requires negative chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Health Statement or physical exam prior to first assignment, updated annually
  • Ascension 12 Panel Drug Screen within 30 days prior to start, updated annually

Onboarding & Documentation

  • Ascension Resume/Profile required for submission
  • Two professional references required prior to first assignment
  • Criminal background check including SSN trace, employment verification, OIG, National Sex Offender, and others within 30 days of assignment
  • Employment and education verifications required and updated annually or after breaks in service
  • Completion of Ascension Nursing Contract Worker Onboarding (onsite)
  • Ascension Onboarding Education Attestation (6 hours pre-hire training)
  • Ascension Badge Photo (forward-facing headshot with white or blue background, no filters)
  • Confirmation of Assignment documentation upon initial assignment and extensions

Additional Notes

  • Optional: Ascension Unit Specific Checklist (uploaded by unit leader within a week)
  • Post-assignment Hiring Manager Evaluation is optional
  • Legal name change documentation optional if applicable

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with stroke unit or step-down experience who meet the credentialing and health requirements for Ascension Health facilities.
