Job Opportunity: Oncology Nurse (Chemo Certified) – Travel/Contract
Location

Position Summary
- Registered Nurse specializing in oncology with chemo certification.
- Focus on acute leukemia and hematology patients.
- Adult and geriatric patient population.
- Care primarily for newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients.
- Medical unit with high use of blood products, IV antibiotics, and electrolyte management.
Contract Details
- Contract length: 16 weeks
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Schedule: Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts possible; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs.
- Staffing ratio goal: 1 nurse to 4 patients (may be up to 1:5)
- Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift
- Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with a preceptor
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 1 year of hematology/oncology experience within the last year.
- Experience in an inpatient setting.
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
- Chemo certification from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Skills and Competencies
- Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias.
- Use of Rapid Response Teams.
- Feeding tube care and management.
- IV therapy and phlebotomy.
- Blood product administration.
- Central line blood draws.
- Peripheral line care and management.
- PICC line management.
- Starting IVs.
- Experience with computerized charting (EPIC system).
Special Focus Areas
- Infection prevention protocols.
- Patient falls prevention.
Patient Population
- Adults and geriatrics with acute leukemia and hematology diagnoses.
Required Background and Health Documentation
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
- Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- Immunizations/vaccinations:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, and rubella
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 – 3/31)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start.
- Fit mask test required annually for inpatient/patient-facing roles (valid for entire assignment).
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and annually.
- Annual TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test renewal.
Orientation and Competency Requirements
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start.
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
- Stroke education (BEFAST) continuing education required annually for stroke-capable units.
- NIH Stroke Certification preferred.
References and Documentation
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leader.

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
