Registered Nurse - Mixed Acuity (Medical Surgical/Telemetry & Stepdown)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • 36 or 48-hour shift options available
  • Must be prepared to float frequently to meet staffing needs across multiple units
  • Unit is a 48-bed mixed acuity unit specializing in Medical Surgical, Neurology, and Neurosurgery patients
  • Patient population includes strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological conditions
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (days), 1:6 (nights), occasionally 1:7 nights
    • Stepdown: 1:3-4 (days and nights)
  • RNs may care for up to five Med Surg patients simultaneously
  • Drip medication administration required on all floors
  • EPIC electronic charting experience required
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
  • Floating may include multiple units and campuses within the system
  • Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and sometimes LPNs
  • Facility is 100% nicotine-free
  • Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
  • Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility)
  • Pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; bookings made six weeks out if not

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting (highest requirement)
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required, but first-time travelers generally not accepted unless experienced at a Level I Academic Medical Center
  • Current RN license for Nebraska (pending license accepted with conditions)
  • EPIC charting experience
  • Drip medication administration experience
  • Ability and willingness to float within scope of practice
  • Must be able to work required holidays and weekends
  • Must wear facility-specific scrubs (Steele gray scrubs required)

Certifications & Compliance

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA certified, as applicable
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA certified, as applicable
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA certified, as applicable
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA certified, as applicable
  • NIH Stroke Certification, as applicable
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including federal enhanced search
  • Drug screening within 60 days of start and updated annually
  • Education verification required
  • State-specific registry and abuse/neglect checks required
  • Physical exam and fit mask test within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap/Tetanus vaccine within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
    • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
    • COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions accepted

Additional Information

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Must submit requests for time off (RTO) with application; limited to two weeks initially
  • Parking permits available for purchase or daily parking rates apply
  • Two professional references from work within the past 2 years required
  • Annual skills checklist required

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with a fast-paced, multi-acuity environment who are flexible with floating and working holidays/weekends.

Cons

Ethics are questionable at best, M/S unit demands higher acuity of care than most hospitals M/S units; a lot of the nurses are inexperienced.
