Registered Nurse (L&D) - Texas, Seguin

Job Overview

• Location: Seguin, Texas (San Antonio area)
• Specialty: Labor & Delivery (L&D), Postpartum, Nursery
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holidays: Work included in permanent staff rotation
• Call Requirement: No call

Unit & Patient Care Details

• L&D Beds: 9 private beds with private bathrooms and sofa sleepers
• Operating Rooms: 2 C-Section OR suites
• Triage Beds: 4
• Postpartum Beds: 12 private beds
• Birth Volume: 2-6 deliveries per day, 900+ births per year
• Patient Types: L&D patients 35 weeks and above, including multiples; no serious high-risk or VBACs; twin vaginal delivery attempted
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • L&D: 1:2, 1:1 for high risk or active labor
  • Postpartum/Mother-Baby: 1:2-3 couplets
• Floating: Required to float within the Birthing Center and occasionally to other units (no infectious patients assigned)
• Orientation: 1 shift with preceptor after initial HR check-in

Clinical Responsibilities

• Circulate in C-sections, tubal ligations, and DNCs (C-section experience required)
• Provide care in L&D, Postpartum, and Nursery areas
• Must be able to perform nursery duties
• No GYN patients except rare overflow
• Hourly rounding on days, every 2 hours on nights
• Use of electronic fetal monitoring system (Centricity CPN/GE)
• EMR system: MediTech Expanse with digital care-boards in patient rooms
• Charge Nurse: Available but may take patients if needed
• OB Techs assist as CNAs when no C-sections

Required Certifications & Skills

• Current RN license
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
• STABLE certification highly preferred (required for permanent staff)
• Must be able to circulate in OR settings

Work Environment & Support

• Birthing Center is a secure, locked unit
• Neonatal Kohden telemetry monitors used (nurses not required to interpret strips)
• OB physician not onsite 24/7; clinic adjacent to hospital with daytime coverage
• Neonatologist onsite Monday-Friday during the day
• Anesthesiology not available 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Pharmacy hours limited; pharmacist on-call evenings and weekends
• Scrubs provided for OR (pink color)
