Job Description

Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a hospital near Sacramento. Candidates must have at least 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience.

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• STABLE (preferred)
• Advanced Fetal Monitoring (copy required at submission)
• CA Nursing License

Experience & Skills

• Must have 2 years of experience in Labor and Delivery (highest requirement from description).
• Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be considered.
• Must be able to "catch the baby" (actively participate in deliveries), especially for night shifts.
• Ability to work in both L&D and Mother/Baby units, including antepartum and postpartum care.
• Experience with C-section OR circulating (2 RNs per OR: 1 for mom, 1 for baby).
• Must be able to read and interpret EKG strips.

Unit Details

• Unit: Family Birthing Center - L&D and Mother Baby Ante/Postpartum
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Labor & Delivery: 1:2
  • Delivery: 1:1
  • Mother/Baby couplets: 1:4
• EMR system: Cerner
• Charge Nurse role available (generally does not take patients, provides break relief)
• Nurse aides available as needed
• Hospitalist or Intensivist on site
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Pharmacy available 24/7
• No ventilator patients on unit
• IV team not available on unit

Scheduling & Shifts

• 12-hour shifts, starting at 6:45 AM
• Report at bedside
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday rotation with core staff
• Self-scheduling available but finalized by manager
• Schedules released 4 weeks in advance
• Overtime and extra shifts available
• On-call response time: 30 minutes
• Floating to other Sacramento facilities possible but rare mid-shift

Orientation & Additional Notes

• Floor-specific orientation: 1-2 days with preceptor
• Patient population includes term, preterm, some high-risk pregnancies, and antepartum patients
• Hospital designated as "baby friendly" with excellent breastfeeding support
• Scrub color provided

Important Notes on On-Call and Cancellation Policies

• On-call/standby shifts have specific pay and cancellation rules, including guaranteed minimum hours and cancellation codes.
• If placed on call for part of a shift, it counts as a cancellation unless worked hours meet contract requirements.
• Detailed scenarios govern pay during low census or on-call periods.

This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery nurses with prior travel experience who are comfortable with all aspects of delivery and mother/baby care in a busy hospital setting.
