Labor & Delivery RN Travel Opportunity - Washington (Silverdale)

Position Overview

  • Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery (L&D) Registered Nurse for a travel contract.
  • Must have 2 full years of L&D experience (1 year considered if multiple prior travel assignments).
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, and an active Washington RN license (pending license submissions accepted; temp license takes ~4 weeks).
  • Must be comfortable attending deliveries independently, circulating in C-sections, assisting with catching and transitioning babies.
  • Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience.
  • RNs are required to titrate drips such as Magnesium, Pitocin, and Insulin.

Unit Details

  • Unit: Birthing Center / Mother Baby
  • Total L&D beds: 34
    • 2 OR suites for C-sections
    • 2 triage beds
    • 14 postpartum beds
  • Average births: 150-180 per month (~2,133 deliveries in 2022)
  • Staffing ratios follow AWHONN guidelines:
    • 1:2 for L&D
    • 1:3-4 for couplets (mother-baby)
  • Charge nurse role is a free charge position on both shifts.
  • Support staff includes one surgical tech 24/7 and a patient care assistant with clerical duties each shift.
  • 24/7 in-house OB/GYN hospitalist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in the nursery.
  • 24/7 OB anesthesia provider with call room on unit.
  • Respiratory therapy equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP), typically one assigned to family birth.
  • Tele/monitor techs available for PACU after C-section; RNs read their own strips.
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) system: Centricity-perinatal.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Gestational age: 33 weeks and above.
  • High-risk patients including preeclampsia, diabetes, psychosocial issues, and positive illicit substance use.

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Contract length: 13 weeks.
  • Block scheduling available upon request.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend (days: Sat & Sun; nights: Fri & Sat).
  • Holiday rotation with permanent staff.
  • Standby call with 45-minute response time when placed on standby.
  • No floating outside the department; travelers must work in both Labor & Delivery and Postpartum units.
  • Must be able to transition babies and attend low-risk deliveries.
  • Scrubs and locker provided.
  • Orientation includes:
    • 8 hours compliance training with manager
    • 8 hours EPIC training
    • 2-3 twelve-hour shifts for unit-specific orientation

Unit Policies & Additional Notes

  • Surgical hand scrub policy:
    • Remove all jewelry from hands and forearms.
    • No artificial nails or nail enhancements (tips, resin wraps, acrylics, gels, nail art, etc.).
    • Natural fingernails only, clean, well-manicured, no longer than ¼ inch beyond fingertip.
    • No open lesions or breaks in skin integrity on cuticles, hands, or forearms.
  • Manager is supportive and provides feedback to ensure quality care.
  • Travelers are expected to be adaptable to workflows, policies, and feedback.

This opportunity is ideal for L&D nurses with solid experience who are comfortable working independently in a busy birthing center with a supportive team and comprehensive resources.

Pros

I was on a med onc unit so might be different culture on each unit. Travel friendly. Staff is great. Ratios were 1-5/6. Schedule was flexible. Cost of living depending on neighborhood was also good.
