Oncology Acute RN Position - Peoria, Illinois
Job Overview
- Department: Oncology Acute
- Unit Size: 19 beds, all private rooms
- Patient Types: All cancer types (commonly Lymphoma and Leukemia), Hematology, medical patients, radiation oncology, and Gynecologic Oncology
- Staffing Ratios:
- Days: Typically 1:5 (can vary 1:4-5)
- Nights: Typically 1:6 (can vary 1:5-6)
- 1:1 staffing for specific medications/therapies as needed
Required Certifications & Experience
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate
- Experience:
- IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration
- Handling chemotherapy precautions (PPE)
- Monitoring for medication side effects
- Medication Titration:
- RNs do not titrate drips; medication adjustments require physician orders
- Common set-rate drips include heparin and chemotherapy (e.g., 24-hour Methotrexate bags)
Unit Support & Equipment
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments but may occasionally
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Patient Care Techs (PCTs):
- 3 PCTs on day shift (0700-1930)
- 2 PCTs on night shift (1900-0730)
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- CPAP: RNs assist
- BiPAP: Only if part of patient’s home regimen; RT manages both CPAP and BiPAP
- Telemetry:
- House-wide telemetry system with Phillips monitors
- RNs are not required to interpret strips
Scheduling & Work Hours
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Shift Times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
- Schedule Flexibility:
- May split contract between day and night shifts or work nights only
- Self-scheduling with coordination for time-off requests
- Schedule finalized on a 6-week cycle
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat/Sun; Nights: Fri/Sat)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travelers participate in float rotation; floating shifts are 4+ hours and assigned fairly
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: 24-36 hours, unit-specific
- EMR System: Epic Beacon
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required
- Local Placement: Accepts clinicians living within 50 miles
- Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
- Non-billable Orientation Hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
Additional Notes
- No specific scrub color required
- Experience with IV chemotherapy and immunotherapy is essential
- Active Illinois nursing license or proof of application required
