Job Details

• Specialty: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Level 3
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour shifts (07:00-19:30, 19:00-07:30)
• Scheduling: Self-scheduling with block scheduling allowed
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for day shift; night shift weekends are flexible based on facility needs (Friday and Saturday nights)
• Holiday Requirement: Assist with coverage as needed
• Call Requirement: No current call or standby requirement
• Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float to PICU, PIC, Pediatrics, Nursery, sitter, Behavioral Health, or adult units as needed

Unit Information

• NICU Beds: 40 designated NICU rooms within a 60-bed unit (expandable to 65 patients)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: NICU 1:1-3; Intermediate Care 1:3-4
• Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; may take patient assignments if staffing gaps occur
• House Supervisor: Available 24/7
• Patient Care Techs: Used on unit; no specific ratio
• Neonatologist Coverage: In-house 24/7 with 2-3 Advanced Practice Nurses and Resident/Fellow coverage
• Monitoring Equipment: Phillips monitors; RNs read their own strips; no telemetry techs on unit
• Respiratory Equipment: Conventional ventilators, oscillator ventilator, JET ventilator, CPAP, nasal IMV, heated high flow, tracheostomy care; RNs troubleshoot as needed

Patient Population & Care

• Common diagnoses include:

  • Premature infants from 22 weeks gestation and up
  • Abdominal defects
  • Pre-cardiac repair patients
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)
  • Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)
  • Other genetic defects
• RNs are required to titrate drips per orders (e.g., Fentanyl, Morphine, Precedex)

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Active Illinois RN license or proof of application in process
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (AHA)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification

Experience Requirements

• Preferred: Level 3 or 4 ICU experience
• Preferred: Experience caring for micro preemies
• Required: Ability to titrate drips as ordered

Orientation & Policies

• Unit-specific orientation: 1-2 days (1 day NIC, 1 day NICU)
• Drug-free workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
• Dress code: No specific scrub color required; no fake nails, nail polish, jewelry, or watches allowed

Additional Notes

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
• Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty
