Registered Nurse (Med Surg Ortho Trauma)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, day and night coverage available
Schedule:
- Day Shift: 06:30 - 19:00
- Night Shift: 18:30 - 07:00
- Typically every other weekend required; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
- 2-3 holidays required between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Limited block scheduling available for travelers
Unit Details
- Department: Medical-Surgical / Telemetry / Orthopedics (4th Floor North & South)
- Number of Beds: 55
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:10-20
- Telemetry Techs interpret monitors; RNs should have tele awareness but do not read strips independently
- Charge Nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
- Mechanical lifts available in every other room
- Focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- Patient population includes diverse cultures (including Spanish, Karen, Burmese)
- Common patient diagnoses: joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, orthopedic trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs required to titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
- Common drips include PCA pumps
- Floating required to other Med-Surg areas or units with Med-Surg patients waiting for beds
Orientation & Training
- Unit/department-specific orientation: 2 days
- RN skills exam during orientation: open book, must pass with 90% or higher to continue
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Nebraska
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Medical-Surgical / Telemetry nursing
- Recent experience in Medical-Surgical / Telemetry within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Additional Notes
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems within a 50-mile radius
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
- Successful nurses on this unit are team players, have good attendance, manage multiple admissions and discharges efficiently, and demonstrate compassion and cultural sensitivity
