Job Summary
Seeking an experienced ICU Registered Nurse with a minimum of 3 full years of recent ICU experience to provide critical care in a Level 1 trauma center environment. Candidates must have experience in either neuro or cardiovascular ICU settings. Flexibility and the ability to float between multiple ICU units are required.
Required Qualifications
- Active Arizona nursing license or compact license
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS (TNCC preferred)
- Minimum 3 years recent ICU experience (with at least 2 years in ICU)
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam (max 2 attempts) prior to acceptance
- Pass/fail simulation lab on Day 1 of orientation
- Ability to titrate drips (e.g., Propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, rocuronium, levophed, vasopressin, cardene, labetalol, dopamine, dobutamine, heparin, insulin)
- Ability to interpret cardiac monitor strips independently (no monitor techs on unit)
Unit Details
- ICU types: Surgical ICU (Trauma Neuro Surgery), Medical ICU (Medical Cardiac + Overflow), CVICU
- Bed counts: 32 beds (Surgical ICU), 36 beds (Medical Cardiac ICU), 12 beds (Overflow ICU)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1 and 1:2
- Charge nurse responsibilities included (charge nurses do not take patients)
- No nurse aides on unit; sitters and Health Unit Secretary available
- 24/7 in-house hospitalist or intensivist coverage
- 24/7 respiratory therapy coverage with advanced ventilator equipment (Dreager, Hamilton, Puritan Bennett 840, V60s Bipap, Airvo)
- No tele/monitor techs; RNs interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Self-scheduling with manager oversight to balance unit needs
- Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
- Night shift weekends: Friday-Saturday
- Day shift weekends: Saturday-Sunday
- May have 1 holiday off per assignment
- No additional call or standby shifts required, but may be low censused up to 3 times per contract
- Floating required between ICUs and to telemetry units (ratios 1:3 or 1:4)
- Scrub color: Navy
- Orientation: 1-2 days, unit-specific
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Trauma patients (falls, gunshot wounds, blunt trauma, motor vehicle accidents)
- Neuro-surgery cases including craniotomies and specialty neuro cases
- Cardiovascular cases including post-op CABG, valve surgeries, TAVR, IABP, Impella, ECMO, Tandem Heart
- Medical ICU diagnoses: sepsis, COVID-19, ARDS, DKA, vascular surgeries, CRRT (not required)
- Other: status post-TPA, COVID, sepsis, ARDS
Additional Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers with required ICU experience are welcome
- Preference for candidates with experience in similar-sized ICU units
- Must be willing and able to float between multiple ICU units and telemetry
- Skills validation for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices will be conducted as needed
This position requires a highly skilled ICU nurse with strong critical care experience, flexibility, and the ability to work independently interpreting cardiac rhythms and managing complex drips in a fast-paced trauma and cardiovascular ICU environment.
