Travel Nurse Opportunity: MS Cardiac ICU RN

Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Unit: Medical Surgical Cardiac ICU
  • Shift: 12-hour night shifts (1830-0700)
  • Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department specific orientation
  • Schedule: Unit schedulers create the schedule
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: As needed
  • Floating: Mainly to PCU, but may float to other hospital areas depending on abilities
  • Nurse:Patient Ratio: Typically 1:2, occasionally 1:1 for TPA, balloon pump, recovery of craniotomy patients
  • Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio approximately 1:10

Patient Population & Care

  • Bed Count: 16 beds
  • Common Diagnoses: Sepsis, STEMI, COVID, stroke, neurosurgery, renal failure, respiratory failure, COPD, cancer, DKA
  • Age Range: Young adults through geriatrics
  • Equipment & Procedures:
    • ICP monitoring and occasional balloon pumps (not always assigned to travelers)
    • Gaymar Hypothermia, Arrow Balloon Pump, Camino Neuro monitoring, CRRT, Impella, EVDs, Lumbar drains
    • Respiratory equipment from nasal cannula to ventilators; RNs troubleshoot vents, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow
    • RNs required to read and interpret telemetry strips
  • Drip Titration: Yes, including sedation, paralytics, pressors, antihypertensives, heparin, insulin

Requirements

  • Specialty: Cardiac ICU RN
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of unit experience including Cardiac ICU experience
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not specified as required
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Valid driver’s license required at submittal (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
    • Candidates may NOT be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
    • Must pass a 90% score on an open book RN skills exam during orientation (failure results in contract termination)
    • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will lead to contract termination

Work Environment & Culture

  • Fast-paced ICU with eICU remote monitoring system
  • Emphasis on bedside shift report and intentional hourly rounding
  • Seeking highly motivated nurses who can critically think through complex situations
  • Candidates do not need to be competent in all ICU areas but must be willing to ask questions, seek resources, and learn
  • Culturally diverse patient population including non-English speakers (Hispanic and Sudanese communities)
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs

Additional Notes

  • Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
  • Radius rule strictly enforced: candidate must live within 50 miles and not be employed by CommonSpirit-affiliated facilities

This position is ideal for a Cardiac ICU RN with at least 1 year of relevant experience who is adaptable, eager to learn, and comfortable working in a diverse, fast-paced environment.
