Emergency Department RN Opportunity - Winnemucca, Nevada

Position Overview

  • Role: Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Northern Nevada
  • Shift: Variable (typically 6 AM - 6 PM, no mid shifts)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years ER nursing experience required
  • Preferred: Candidates with 3 or more completed travel assignments
  • Must have strong independent skills and triage experience
  • Occasional float to Medical-Surgical/Telemetry to assist other nurses (typically no own patients)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • Preferred: NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Department & Facility Details

  • Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
  • STEMI Receiving: Yes (stabilize and transfer out STEMIs and strokes)
  • Beds: 8 ER beds
  • Triage: No designated triage nurse; any ER nurse may triage using the ESI model
  • Holding Area: No separate holding area; holds are kept in the ER
  • Psychiatric Care: 2 designated safe rooms for psych patients; security rounds every 15 minutes
  • Security: In-house 24/7, including ER coverage
  • Patient Volume: Approximately 30 patients per day (700 per month)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity and census

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Pediatric patients: ~25%
  • Large Hispanic population
  • Common cases include:
    • Cardiac issues (arrhythmias, STEMIs, NSTEMIs, hypertension, CHF exacerbations)
    • Strokes and post-stroke care
    • Trauma (motor vehicle accidents, falls)
    • Orthopedic cases
    • Gastrointestinal issues
    • Alcohol-related cases and overdoses
    • COPD and respiratory conditions

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Must be comfortable with conscious sedation and managing critical drips, including ketamine for bedside procedures
  • Nurses expected to read and interpret telemetry (no monitor techs present)
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; nurses may assist with respiratory equipment troubleshooting and management (NC, High Flow, CPAP, BiPAP, trachs, vents)
  • RN responsible for lab draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy support available if needed
  • Assist with patient transport for X-ray/CT unless patient is critical (then RN accompanies)
  • Participate as part of Rapid Response Team (RRT); may respond to codes and emergencies hospital-wide

Staffing & Support

  • ED Physician: 1 onsite per 24-hour shift
  • Charge Nurse: Designated working charge nurse available as a resource
  • Nurse Aides: No CNAs in ER; primary care nursing model; travelers may assist with precepting nursing, EMT, and paramedic students
  • Orientation: 1 day general orientation plus 1-2 days with a preceptor

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Schedule: Typically block schedule (6 days on, 8 days off), flexible to fill gaps in permanent schedule
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 1-2 weekends per month
  • Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday rotation; may be asked to participate
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Scrub Color: Navy blue
