Job Opportunity: RN - Operating Room (Outpatient Surgery Center)

Location: State College, Pennsylvania
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Assess and respond to the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients; act as a patient advocate.
  • Set up the operating room with appropriate sterile supplies and equipment according to assignments and schedule.
  • Collaborate with scrub nurse/technician, anesthesia personnel, and surgeon to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient care environment.
  • Identify patient and operative site per policy; safely transport patients; communicate information accurately to the surgical team and document timely.
  • Maintain constant observation of the sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
  • Chart required patient information, verify consent and history & physical (H&P) for each procedure, and perform surgical "time out" properly.
  • Oversee sponge, needle, and instrument counts before and during surgery; report results to the surgeon.
  • Ensure appropriate medications are available, properly labeled, and used correctly on the sterile field.
  • Handle specimens safely and correctly, including labeling, recording, and placing in proper containers.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles and gloves when handling waste and soiled items; ensure team compliance.
  • When functioning as a float/resource nurse, maintain communication across areas, relieve personnel for breaks, assist with case carts, and manage patient flow according to OR schedule.
  • Review surgeon preference cards periodically to ensure availability of specific supplies and equipment.
  • Independently learn and familiarize with all equipment, procedures, supplies, drugs, and their storage locations.
  • Be familiar with anesthesia supplies, crash cart, malignant hyperthermia (MH) cart, anesthesia emergency carts, and airway management tools (endotracheal tubes, LMAs, endoscopes, anesthesia medications).
  • Utilize supplies and equipment efficiently to contain costs without compromising patient care; participate in annual inventory counts and accurately decrement supplies.
  • Assist with housekeeping duties as needed (making beds, mopping floors between cases, disposing of trash).
  • Perform other duties such as Phase 2 nurse or late nurse as required, working in other patient areas with appropriate skill levels.
