Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Acute care nursing position in Medical/Surgical Overflow area
  • Care for acute care inpatients requiring medical/surgical, telemetry, or IMC level of care
  • Manage antiarrhythmia drips without titration
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and conduct NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) assessments as ordered
  • Float within skillset when not needed on home unit
  • No block scheduling
  • Weekends/Holidays: Every other weekend and 2 out of 3 winter holidays required
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Locals accepted
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios approximately 1:4-5+
  • Minimum 2 years of acute care experience required
  • Must be available to work 2 of 3 holidays

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for Medical/Surgical, Telemetry, IMC, Adult Critical Care, ED, PCU, L&D, Outpatient Surgery. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all RNs and many tech roles. Certificates expiring within a month of start require renewal confirmation.
  • NIH Stroke Certification: Required for adult critical care specialties, ED, Telemetry, MS/Tele, Cath Lab, and stroke centers. Must be updated annually.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for Pediatric ER, Pediatric Acute Care, ED, Outpatient Surgery, PACU, PICU, and Pediatrics.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required for L&D, Mother-Baby, NICU, Nursery, Antepartum, and Special Care Nursery.
  • CHEMO (Chemotherapy Certification): Required for adult and pediatric chemo certified nurses as applicable.
  • Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB): Required for ER, Pediatric ER, and Behavioral Health RNs. Online portion must be completed by hire date; in-person portion within 14 days of start.
  • Pass/Fail Testing: Pharmacology and Basic EKG exams required for clinical staff in relevant units. Candidates have 3 attempts to pass.
  • Competency Exams: Medication, Dysrhythmia/EKG, and general competency exams required within 12 months of start.

Required Licenses and Verifications

  • Valid RN license with legal last name matching documentation
  • NURSYS verification as applicable
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Work history verification (minimum 1 year prior to start, with gaps ≤30 days)
  • Two references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference

Required Background Checks and Screenings

  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and for every contract renewal
  • Drug screen (10-panel urine) within 30 days of start
  • Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) checks as applicable (not reviewed by facility for this location)

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption annually (flu season Sept-April)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination within last 10 years
  • Immunity or vaccination proof for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B
  • Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing for respirators (N95) prior to start
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if job tasks require glove use
  • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination
  • Annual OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission training acknowledgment

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific floating policy for every new assignment
  • Must complete annual education sign-off and facility-specific orientation materials
  • Must be available for on-site fit testing and complete Respiratory Safety clearance
  • Must complete required CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for Med Surg, Stroke, Trauma, and other specialty areas as applicable
  • Must complete and sign attestation regarding pending background checks if applicable

Work Schedule and Conditions

  • Every other weekend and holiday coverage required (including 2 of 3 winter holidays)
  • No block scheduling
  • Floating to other units within skillset as needed

This position is ideal for experienced acute care RNs who are flexible, able to work holidays and weekends, and meet the comprehensive certification and health requirements of a major healthcare system in New Jersey.
