Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Seattle, Washington
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in a high-risk, high-volume Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit with approximately 500-600 deliveries per month.
- Float responsibilities include postpartum and antepartum care; may float to sister facilities providing Mother/Baby care.
- Patient population includes midwifery clients, private OBs, adult recovery services (substance recovery), and community care clinics.
- Must function as a Baby Nurse during delivery and provide newborn care until transfer to postpartum.
- Circulating nurse duties required during deliveries.
- Must be skilled in newborn care including eye care, Vitamin K injections, and newborn assessments.
- Experience with medications such as Heparin, Insulin, and Magnesium Sulfate is necessary.
- Use of EPIC electronic health record system and electronic fetal monitoring required.
- Staffing follows AWHONN guidelines.
- Schedule posted every 6 weeks; work every other weekend and holidays as needed.
- Average daily census: 15 patients; 31 rooms/beds.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Washington.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Minimum 3 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
- Minimum 3 years experience working in a high acuity and high pace environment.
- Experience working with high-risk patients.
- Certifications required:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- Proficient in electronic fetal monitoring (EFM).
Orientation
- No non-billable orientation hours required (0 hours vs. standard 40 hours).
Work Environment & Additional Details
- Fast-paced, high-acuity L&D unit with 4 operating rooms.
- Must be able to float to related units within the hospital system.
- Pre-approved time off considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Locals at the same rate; candidates previously employed at other facilities within the system may be eligible after a 3-month separation.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Social Security Card (as applicable)
- Background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years, including SSN trace, death master index, sex offender registry, education verification, and others as required.
- Education verification for nursing degree (required for international education).
- Employment application covering at least the last 5 years of employment with month/year format.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by MD, NP, PA, or DO, indicating ability to work with or without accommodation.
- Immunizations and health requirements:
- TDAP vaccine within 10 years or signed declination
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months (annual updates required)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer with acceptable documentation
- Hepatitis B vaccination series or signed declination
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer
- Seasonal flu vaccine or signed declination (required during flu season)
- COVID vaccination record preferred; declinations accepted with adherence to infection prevention policies
- Drug screening: 9-panel drug screen within 12 months of start (instant acceptable)
- Respirator clearance (RespSafety) required annually for travel candidates starting on or after 2/5/2024.
- Annual completion of required regulatory and specialty-specific training modules via LMS (Workramp).
Additional Requirements
- Must complete WA Multi-State Licensed Nurses Demographic Attestation if working with an out-of-state compact license in Washington.
- Must acknowledge and comply with float policy; may be required to float to other facilities within reasonable distance.
- EPIC training modules required; transcripts must be submitted and verified.
- Must be able to pass color blindness testing if required by unit.
- Medication and pharmacology competency exams required as applicable.
Prior Travel Experience
- First-time travel nurses accepted; prior travel experience is not required.
Summary
This is a travel contract position for an experienced Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse to work night shifts in a busy, high-risk L&D unit in Seattle, WA. Candidates must have strong high-risk L&D experience, current RN licensure, required certifications, and the ability to provide comprehensive newborn care. The role requires flexibility to float within related units and adherence to strict clinical and compliance standards.
