Registered Nurse – PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Medical Oncology unit with progressive care beds and some pediatric patients (pediatric experience not required).
- High acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with some med-surg patients.
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit; over 24 beds dedicated to PCU level of care.
- Patient diagnoses include Solid Tumor, Orthopedic Oncology, and Thoracic Oncology.
- Staffing ratios:
- Med Surg Telemetry: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
- PCU: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Required to float within units of equivalent or lower acuity.
- Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.
Schedule & Orientation
- Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts (days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM; nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM).
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes based on staffing needs and not guaranteed.
- Self-scheduling requests allowed before final schedule posting.
- Orientation:
- Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
- Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Experience with use of rapid response teams.
- Central line and PICC line care and management.
- Knowledge and management of Heparin protocols.
- Ability to manage cardiac drips without titration and titrate cardiac drips as needed.
- Proficiency in PCA pump management.
- Chest tube care, specifically Emerson/Pleur-evac systems.
- Experience with external CPAP/BIPAP devices.
- Use and management of High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC).
Skills & Competencies Required
- Interpretation of dysrhythmias and use of rapid response teams.
- Feeding tube care and management.
- Accessing and managing Ports, Central lines, Peripheral lines, and PICC lines.
- Blood product administration.
- Starting IVs and managing Heparin protocols.
- Managing cardiac drips (no titration) and titrating cardiac drips.
- PCA pump management.
- Chest tube care (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
- Use of external CPAP/BIPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC).
- Interpretation of arterial blood gases (ABGs).
- Nasal cannula oxygen delivery and tracheostomy management.
Preferred Skills
- Management of dysrhythmias.
- IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips.
- Phlebotomy.
- Chemotherapy administration and monitoring.
- Wound care including Wound Vac.
- Arterial line management.
- Surgical drain care.
- Non-invasive airway management.

- B450 monitors with GE telemetry system.
- Bladder scanner.
- Alaris infusion pumps.
- Stryker beds.
- Continuous bladder irrigation equipment.
- PCA pumps.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG monitored monthly.
- Education must be from accredited nursing programs (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Fingerprinting (Ohio BCI & FBI) required within 1 year of start; must be completed with specific code.
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies required.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
- Competency exams and certifications must be current and maintained per facility policy.
This position is ideal for experienced RNs with PCU or oncology experience seeking a travel contract in a high-acuity oncology telemetry setting with flexible scheduling and comprehensive orientation.

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
