Float Pool RN Position

Location: Kankakee, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Credentials & Experience

• Illinois RN license in hand
• ACLS and BLS certifications required
• NIHSS certification preferred
• Must have EPIC experience
• Preferred: prior travel nursing experience
• Minimum 2+ years nursing experience required
• Prior float pool experience preferred
• Drivers License required for submission

Department & Units

• Float Pool covering:

  • 5 MedSurg
  • 5 Med Peds
  • Telemetry (IMCU)
  • Rehab
  • Behavioral Health (Senior, Adolescent, Adult)

Patient Ratios & Staffing

• Nurse:Patient Ratios:

  • MedSurg/Med Peds: 1:5-6
  • IMCU: 1:5
• Use of LPNs; full RN assignments (no team nursing currently)
• CNAs present with 1:10 ratio; additional nurse staffing if CNA coverage low
• Non-CNA sitters for behavioral health patients
• Charge Nurse:

  • Day shift: Team Lead, no patients assigned
  • Nights/weekends/holidays: Charge nurse takes patients

Clinical Information

• Common Diagnoses:

  • Acute surgical, ortho/neuro, occasional hip/knee
  • Med Surg, detox, hospice
  • Med Peds (mostly respiratory illness)
  • Telemetry: post-surgical, CHF, chest pain, radial catheter procedures (training provided for radial band management)
  • Chest tubes mainly in IMCU
  • High renal population including peritoneal dialysis
  • Rehab with some IVs
  • Bipap/CPAP at night if home setting; continuous Bipap in IMCU
• Cath lab recovery experience required for IMCU
• RNs do not titrate drips except heparin per protocol
• Common titratable meds: heparin, lasix; IMCU may titrate amiodarone, cardizem, dobutamine, lasix, insulin (glucomander)
• Respiratory Therapy manages ventilator settings; vents only on ICU
• Nurses may assist RT with nebulizer treatments upon request
• Telemetry:

  • Med/Tele units have remote telemetry monitored 24/7 by techs; nurses verify strips
  • ICU handles own telemetry strips

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift times:

  • Most units: 5am-5pm or 5pm-5am (12-hour shifts)
  • Mental health: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
• Assignments given by call-in no more than 1 hour before shift start
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: every other holiday
• Call or standby: not usually required
• Orientation: 1 shift (12 hours) on one unit; units have similar setups

Additional Notes

• Scrub color: Caribbean blue
• Local candidates within 50 miles considered with adjusted pay rate
• Clinical prescreen required by facility before hire
• No second phone interview; hiring manager responds within 24 hours of recommendation

This position is ideal for experienced float pool RNs with strong MedSurg, telemetry, and behavioral health skills, comfortable with variable unit assignments and flexible scheduling.
