Registered Nurse (Medical-Surgical Acute Care) - Peoria, Illinois
Job Details
- Specialty: Medical-Surgical Acute Care (MSAC)
- Shift: Nights (7pm - 7am)
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Hours per Week: 36
- Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
- Location: Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
Unit Information
- Unit Size: 18 beds (mostly private rooms, 1 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
- Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
- Patient Types: General medical patients with various diagnoses
- Support Staff:
- Two Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift (ratio approx. 9:1 when full)
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Unit clerk (PCL) with 24-hour coverage
- Respiratory therapists (RT) available 24/7
- Hospitalist/Intensivist in-house 24/7
- Pharmacy staff prepare all medications 24/7
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate Heparin drips
- Patients may require oxygen up to 6L nasal cannula, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or as needed
- Telemetry monitoring is done remotely by a house-wide telemetry department; unit uses Phillips equipment
- RNs expected to attempt IV starts; inpatient phlebotomy team assists with blood draws
- Charge RN coverage 24 hours; charge nurse may have patient assignments
- Travel RNs are first to float to other units as needed
Scheduling & Orientation
- 12-hour night shifts (7pm - 7am) with shift report at shift change
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Fri/Sat nights)
- Holiday rotation per policy
- No call or standby requirement
- Travel RNs typically have one 12-hour shift orientation with a unit preceptor
- Travelers may collaborate with unit leadership for scheduling preferences
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- ACLS preferred for Charge RN positions
- Minimum 1 year hospital experience preferred
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus)
Additional Information
- Dress code: Any color scrubs allowed; staff must provide their own (no pediatric scrubs)
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
