Registered Nurse – Stepdown Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (4 shifts per 4-week period, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48


Unit & Patient Population

  • Mixed Acuity: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Stepdown care levels
  • 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Patient conditions include strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological disorders
  • Eight beds equipped for long-term EEG monitoring
  • Multi-care level unit; RNs may care for up to six Med Surg patients simultaneously

Staffing Ratios

  • Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 (rare)
  • Stepdown: 1:3-4 (day and night)

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; otherwise, booking delayed by six weeks)
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment required
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience with EPIC electronic charting system
  • ACLS and BLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification or competency
  • Must have a valid Driver's License

Licensure & Certifications

  • State license verification and primary source verification required prior to start

Facility & Work Environment

  • 100% nicotine-free facility
  • Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs
  • Mandatory scrubs: Steele gray with facility logo (provided after confirmation)
  • Parking available via permit or daily rates

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat night)
  • Up to two weeks of Return to Origin (RTO) allowed, must be requested with application
  • Holiday work requirement: must work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks
  • Ongoing SAM and OIG checks every 30 days
  • Education verification and high school diploma required (for applicable roles)
  • State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required
  • Annual physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 1870+) required
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Drug screen within 60 days of start and annually thereafter
    • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
    • COVID vaccine preferred; exemptions accepted
  • Annual skills checklist required
  • Two professional references from the past 2 years required

Additional Notes

  • Locals not accepted; candidate must reside more than 100 miles from the facility
  • Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
  • Facility is a top-rated acute care hospital with a strong academic affiliation and complex patient population

This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs with neurology/stepdown expertise who are comfortable with floating and working in a high-acuity, multi-level care environment.
