Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Irvine, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Registered Nurse role specializing in Medical Surgical Oncology at a cancer specialty hospital.
• Day shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM).
• Weekend and float coverage required.
• Use of Pyxis medication system and EPIC documentation.
• Communication using SBAR technique.
• Uniform: Caribbean blue scrubs (not provided).

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 3+ years experience as a Registered Nurse in inpatient oncology.
• Care experience with patients having bladder, kidney, breast, colorectal, liver, lung, ovarian/uterine, pancreatic, and prostate cancers.
• Chemotherapy administration including:

  • Continuous infusion, IV push, oral administration.
  • Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy.
  • Management and disposal of cytotoxic spills.
  • Monitoring chemotherapy effects and recognizing abnormal lab values.
• Knowledge of antibiotics, antiemetics, antitumor agents, corticosteroids, hormonal therapy, Neupogen, and post-surgical care.

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

• Biotherapy (active immunotherapy, interferons, interleukins).
• Bone marrow administration, graft rejection, graft-versus-host disease, stem cell therapies.
• Care of patients with brain tumors, ENT cancers, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, multiple myeloma.
• IV therapy/infusions, acute tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, sepsis, spinal cord compression.
• Pain management, care coordination, chest tube care, colostomy/ileostomy management, Foley catheter management.
• Dysrhythmia interpretation, isolation precautions, neutropenic precautions, phlebotomy, telephone triage.
• Tracheostomy care, wound care, advanced directives, hospice care, patient/family education, pediatric team collaboration.
• Radiation therapy and symptom management.

Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA Provider only; HeartCode Complete not accepted.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA Provider only; HeartSaver not accepted.
• Chemotherapy Certification – ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certificate required; ONS Fundamentals not accepted.

Licensure

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for California.
• Primary source verification required prior to start and upon expiration.
• NURSYS verification required prior to start.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
• Background check within 1 year covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, including Social Security trace, county, nationwide, sex offender, and education verification.
• Education verification and diploma/transcripts as applicable.
• Physical exam within last 12 months.
• Immunizations and health screenings:

  • Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (with specific requirements for past positives).
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer.
  • Hepatitis B series or positive titer (declination requires proof of non-immune status).
  • Varicella vaccination or positive titer (declination requires notification and accommodations).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption during flu season.
• Drug screening: 10-panel oral drug screen within 1 year of start.
• Respirator questionnaire and RespSafety clearance annually for respirator use.
• Annual competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable.
• Job description acknowledgement and facility-specific forms must be reviewed and signed.

Additional Notes

• Fit testing for masks will be completed onsite if RespSafety clearance is on file; otherwise, must have fit test within 12 months prior to start.
• Religious and medical exemption forms are time sensitive and require facility committee approval.
• Prior travel experience is not specified as required for this position.

This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs comfortable with chemotherapy administration and complex cancer patient care in a fast-paced specialty hospital setting.

Requirements / Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
• Minimum 3 years of oncology nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Experience in an inpatient setting
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certificate required)
• Experience with chemotherapy administration including:

  • Continuous infusion
  • IV push administration
  • Body fluid handling post-chemotherapy
  • Management and disposal of cytotoxic spills
• Experience administering hormonal therapy and Neupogen
• Proficiency with EPIC electronic medical record system
