Job Opportunity: Step Down Nurse (Registered Nurse)

Location: Utica, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), 5th Floor unit
  • Patient ratio typically 4:1 depending on acuity; may be 5:1 if acuity is low
  • Care includes post-procedural patients and stroke patients
  • Experience with drips including neo (up to 100), precedex, insulin (glucomander), arterial lines (A lines), and TR bands required
  • Use of Epic electronic health record system required
  • Return to office (RTO) within 7 days or less, with only 1 holiday allowed during contract

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including at least 1 year within the last year
  • Minimum 2 years of Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) / step-down experience
  • Current ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Current PALS certification issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Harassment Prevention Training Certificate
  • Experience with drips including neo (up to 100), precedex, insulin, and glucomander
  • Experience with arterial lines (A-lines) and TR bands
  • Experience in stroke care and post-procedural patient care
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Training

  • BLS and ACLS certifications must be current (AHA strongly preferred)
  • NIH Stroke Certification valid within 2 years
  • Harassment Prevention Training Certificate (New York requirement)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ICU, PCU, ER, CT ICU, and similar units; expires every 3 years)
  • Color Blind Testing prior to start
  • Competency exams as applicable to profession

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date
  • Fit mask test within 1 year and updated annually (specific mask types required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (with specific documentation requirements)
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
    • Varicella (titer, vaccine, or documented history)
  • 9 Panel Drug Screen within 1 year of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (September 1 - March 31)
  • Pneumonia vaccination or declination required

Additional Requirements

  • 2 professional references within 3 years for travel, allied, or per diem acute care roles
  • Skills checklist required annually
  • Completion of facility-specific online learning modules prior to first shift
  • Photo for badge (appropriate headshot)
  • Signing of job description and welcome packet acknowledgements
