Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Job Description

• Work on a 40-bed medical surgical unit specializing in neurological disorders such as Stroke, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and other inflammatory brain and spinal cord disorders.
• Patient population includes post-operative neuro-surgery, ortho-surgery, laminectomy, spinal fusion, and bariatric patients.
• Unit includes six step-down/telemetry beds and a four-bed Neuro Monitoring Unit for seizure patients starting at age 5.
• Nurse to patient ratio typically 1:4 or 1:5.
• May be asked to float to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, and ED waiting rooms.
• Equipment used includes EPIC and Pyxis.
• Every other weekend work required.
• No holiday time off requests allowed; dates may be discussed with management.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
• Minimum of 1 year of Medical/Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.

Additional Requirements

• Must complete a criminal background check including lifetime search and various verifications within 45 days of start.
• Must complete MI LARA fingerprinting within 45 days of start (for certain positions).
• Must provide proof of immunizations and health screenings including:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 30 days of start
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
• Drug screening: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
• Physical exam within 1 year of start.
• Completion of medication and competency exams within 1 year prior to assignment start.
• Must review and sign facility-specific policies including Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards.
• Flu vaccination required for candidates starting after November 1, or approved medical/spiritual exemption submitted within 48 hours of contract signing.

Work Environment

• Neurological-focused Med/Surg unit with diverse patient population including bariatric and pediatric seizure patients.
• Use of electronic medical records and automated medication dispensing systems.
• Collaborative team environment with potential floating to critical care and emergency departments.

Notes

• Locals within 50 miles may be accepted with different rate considerations.
• Holiday time off requests are generally not approved.
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
