Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a 40-bed medical surgical unit specializing in neurological disorders such as Stroke, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and other inflammatory brain and spinal cord disorders.
- Patient population includes post-operative neuro-surgery, ortho-surgery, laminectomy, spinal fusion, and bariatric patients.
- Unit includes six step-down/telemetry beds and a four-bed Neuro Monitoring Unit for seizure patients starting at age 5.
- Nurse to patient ratio typically 1:4 or 1:5.
- May be asked to float to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, and ED waiting rooms.
- Equipment used includes EPIC and Pyxis.
- Every other weekend work required.
- No holiday time off requests allowed; dates may be discussed with management.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan.
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical/Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.
Additional Requirements
- Must complete a criminal background check including lifetime search and various verifications within 45 days of start.
- Must complete MI LARA fingerprinting within 45 days of start (for certain positions).
- Must provide proof of immunizations and health screenings including:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 30 days of start
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
- Drug screening: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Completion of medication and competency exams within 1 year prior to assignment start.
- Must review and sign facility-specific policies including Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards.
- Flu vaccination required for candidates starting after November 1, or approved medical/spiritual exemption submitted within 48 hours of contract signing.
Work Environment
- Neurological-focused Med/Surg unit with diverse patient population including bariatric and pediatric seizure patients.
- Use of electronic medical records and automated medication dispensing systems.
- Collaborative team environment with potential floating to critical care and emergency departments.
Notes
- Locals within 50 miles may be accepted with different rate considerations.
- Holiday time off requests are generally not approved.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
