Travel/Contract Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Neuro

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Work option: 36 or 48-hour shifts
• Unit: 48-bed mixed acuity unit (Medical Surgical/Telemetry & Stepdown) specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
• Patient population includes strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological conditions
• Care for up to five Med Surg patients per nurse
• Ratios:

  • Med Surg/Telemetry: 1:5 (days), 1:6 (nights), occasionally 1:7 nights
  • Stepdown: 1:3-4 (days and nights)
• Drip infusions required on all floors
• EPIC charting experience required
• Floating required frequently, including to multiple units and potentially Bellevue campus
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
• Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
• No local candidates accepted (must live more than 100 miles away)
• 100% nicotine-free facility
• Scrubs: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo mandatory

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska
• Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital (higher experience requirement confirmed)
• EPIC electronic medical record experience
• First-time travelers NOT accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
• Prior travel experience is NOT explicitly required
• Ability and willingness to float within scope to meet staffing needs
• Must be able to work required weekends and holidays
• Pending license accepted but must be in hand before start (booking six weeks out if not)

Certifications & Competencies

• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA required
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA required as applicable
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA required as applicable
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA required as applicable
• NIH Stroke Certification - required as applicable
• Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam - required as applicable
• Annual Skills Checklist required

Background & Health Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required
• Background check within 30 days of start, including nationwide and federal enhanced searches
• SAM and OIG checks required within 30 days of start and monthly thereafter
• Education verification required
• State-specific registry checks required
• Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+)
• Immunizations and health screenings required:

  • Tdap within last 10 years
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
  • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
  • Hepatitis B titer or declination
  • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if low/equivocal titers)
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
  • COVID vaccine preferred (medical/religious exemption or declination accepted)
• Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)

Additional Information

• Floating may include multiple units such as 4CS, 5 West, 6 Neuro, 4/5 Lied, 6/7 Lied, 7 HVU, 8 Werner, 9 Trauma, Bellevue MS, Observation, SOTU
• Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics; LPNs assigned on some floors
• Parking permits available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates
• RTO (Request Time Off) allowed up to 2 weeks, must be submitted with application; additional requests at manager discretion

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with strong neuro and med-surg skills, EPIC proficiency, and flexibility to float across units in a high-acuity academic medical center environment.
