Registered Nurse (NICU) - New Haven, Connecticut

Employment Type: Per Diem
Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (1845-0715)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

NICU Registered Nurses are needed for night shifts. The role involves caring for neonates primarily > 34 weeks gestation, with some preferred experience in neonates < 24-28 weeks and 29-34 weeks.


Requirements

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years NICU experience
    • Level IV NICU experience required
  • Licensure:
    • Active nursing license in Connecticut
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • References:
    • 2 clinical references, including at least 1 leadership reference from assignments within the last year
  • Floating: Required
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (1st time travelers accepted)
  • Shift Commitment: Must be available and able to commit to 4 shifts per month
  • Compliance: Must prioritize and meet all compliance deadlines before start date

Required Skills

  • Care of neonates > 34 weeks
  • Phototherapy
  • Breastfeeding support and handling of breast milk
  • Feedings (bottle, breast gavage)
  • Placement and management of oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes
  • Isolation precautions
  • Central line/implanted line care
  • Starting and maintaining IVs
  • Administration of antibiotics/antivirals
  • Neonatal dosage calculations
  • Phlebotomy

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with NICU Level III
  • Care of neonates 29-34 weeks and < 24-28 weeks

Orientation

  • 2-3 days orientation including:
    • Virtual orientation (Friday)
    • In-person orientation (Monday)
    • Epic training (Wednesday) with test-out option for experienced users

Systems & Equipment

  • Charting system: Epic
  • Medication system: Pyxis
  • Scrubs color: Royal Blue

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check including sex offender registry
  • Physical exam within the last 12 months
  • Respiratory fit mask test (must list brand and size)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within the last year
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (proof of series or declination)
    • Varicella (immunity by history, titer, or immunization)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • COVID-19 vaccination required (with some medical exemptions allowed, no religious exemptions)
  • Compliance with COVID-19 booster deadlines as applicable

Additional Notes

  • 1-year separation period required for previous permanent employees
  • Medical/religious exemptions allowed for some requirements, but COVID-19 religious exemptions are not accepted
  • Candidates must not be actively seeking other per diem or travel jobs that would interfere with shift commitment
  • Shifts access granted only after successful clearance post-orientation

This position is ideal for NICU RNs with solid Level IV NICU experience looking for per diem night shifts in Connecticut. First-time travelers are welcome.
