Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week


Unit & Patient Population

  • 19-bed blended unit: 8 Step Down beds, 11 Med-Surg/Telemetry beds
  • Patient types include post-procedure cardiac (cath/stents/interventions, pacers, ICD, ablation), STEMI/NSTEMI care, carotid endarterectomy, sepsis, neuro cases (CVAs, seizures, possible TBI), and DKA
  • Ratio: Day shift 1:5-6, Night shift 1:4; Step Down RNs also care for Med-Surg/Telemetry patients
  • Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires

Float & Scheduling Requirements

  • Float within skillset required: primarily within the same campus; possible float to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekends every 6 weeks
  • Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
  • No on-call or call-back required

Required Qualifications

  • Current active compact RN license for Indiana
  • Certifications: AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, NIHSS
  • Minimum experience:
    • Either 2 years solid Step Down experience plus 1 prior travel contract,
    • Or 5 years solid Step Down experience if no prior travel experience
  • Recent EPIC charting experience required (checkoff class will be required)
  • Must pass Telemetry tests (12-lead EKG interpretation)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills
  • Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation
  • Post heart cath care including femoral/TR bands
  • Initiate and titrate drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Cardene, Nitro, Insulin, Heparin)
  • NIHSS and strong neuro assessments
  • Sepsis care and chest tube management
  • Peripheral IV insertion

Additional Information

  • No local candidates within 40-mile radius considered
  • Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
  • Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins may result in termination
  • COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
  • Guaranteed hours except during holidays when the unit is closed
  • Orientation includes bi-weekly sessions starting 5/18; GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week
