Job Details

• Specialty: Medical Surgical / Telemetry
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour nights (6:30 PM - 7:00 AM)
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
• Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks; every other holiday
• Float Requirement:

  • First to float within skillset
  • Possible float to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice
  • Mid-shift float within same campus; cross-campus mid-shift float unlikely but possible
• On Call/Call Back: Not required

Experience & Certifications

• Required Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years strong Medical Surgical / Telemetry experience
  • At least 1 prior travel assignment completed (prior travel experience required)
  • Trauma Level II experience
• Preferred Experience: Charge nurse experience
• Charting: Recent EPIC experience required (checkoff class required)
• Certifications Required:

  • Current active compact nursing license
  • AHA BLS
  • AHA ACLS
  • NIHSS

Patient Population & Skills

• Patient Population:

  • Complex Med/Surg/Telemetry patients
  • Post cardiac catheterization with interventions
  • CVA/TIA, ICD patients
  • Complex abdominal surgeries (open bellies/colons)
  • Oncology
  • Post-op craniotomy (POD 2)
• Required Skills:

  • NIHSS, dysphagia screening, strong neuro assessment skills
  • Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation (travelers must pass telemetry tests)
  • Initiate and titrate drips (insulin, cardiac meds, heparin, etc.)
  • Heart catheterization recovery care (femoral & TR bands)
  • Strong assessment and critical thinking skills
• Preferred Skills:

  • NG/PEG tube care
  • Peripheral IV insertion
  • Tikosyn administration
  • Chest tube management

Unit Information

• 32-bed Neuro Cardiac Unit
• Nurse-to-patient ratio:

  • Days: 1:4-5 (rarely 1:6)
  • Nights: 1:6-7
• Charge nurse takes assignments on all shifts
• Welcoming and supportive staff with proactive charge nurses and helpful clerical support
• Navy blue scrubs required; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
• Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires

• No local candidates within 40-mile radius accepted
• COVID-19 vaccine not required (subject to change)
• Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins can result in termination
• GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week; guaranteed set hours otherwise except during unit holidays
