Job Opportunity: Oncology Chemo Certified Registered Nurse

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a General Medical Unit (GMU) step-down unit caring for general medical and oncology step-down patients.
  • Available schedules: 36 or 48 hour weeks (indicate preference when applying).
  • Nurse to patient ratio typically 1:4-6; ratios may flex higher with support staff. Chemo admissions reduce assignment ratios.
  • Floating to other med-surg areas including Acute Unit (AU) and Emergency Room (ER) to care for med-surg patients.
  • Weekend work: every other weekend.
  • No call required.
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated upon request.
  • Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
  • Requests for time off after offer must be discussed with onsite manager.

Required Skills

  • Administering chemotherapy via IV.
  • Starting IVs.
  • Experience with Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps.
  • EPIC electronic documentation system.
  • Minimum 2 years of PCU/Stepdown nursing experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) only.
  • Oncology Nursing Certification (ONCC) or Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification required. Pending ONS certification accepted, but ONC must be in hand.
  • NIH Stroke Certification.

Additional Certifications (as applicable)

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - AHA only.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - AHA only (if working with pediatrics).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - AAP or American Medical Learning Center only (if working with pediatrics).
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) (required for Emergency Department).
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) (as applicable).
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) (as applicable).
  • ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course) (as applicable).

Scheduling and Work Environment

  • Weekends assigned by manager/scheduler; other days can be self-scheduled.
  • Floating to other med-surg units including AU and ER.
  • Charge RN typically not assigned patients.
  • Chemo admissions reduce patient assignment ratios.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in PCU/Stepdown nursing.

Prior Travel Experience

  • No explicit requirement for prior travel experience.

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
  • Proof of Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine.
  • Proof of Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination.
  • Hepatitis B titer, series, or facility declination required.
  • 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1.
  • Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) for acute care roles.
  • Background checks including criminal history, SSN trace, national and state searches, education verification, and others as required.
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not typically RN stepdown).
  • Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty roles (not applicable here).

Documentation and Compliance

  • Complete application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.
  • One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units.
  • Various facility-specific documents including Code of Conduct, Appearance Standards, and vaccine exemption forms as applicable.
