Job Opportunity: Operating Room Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) in Ambulatory Operating Room
  • Shift: 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week (6:30 AM - 5:00 PM)
  • Scheduled day off based on department needs; occasional late shifts a few times per month
  • No on-call required
  • Possibility of floating within Perioperative facility as needed
  • Block scheduling available at manager’s discretion

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Experience in specialties including Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, Gynecology, Genitourinary, Endocrine, Surgical Oncology, Plastics, Robotics, Total Joints
  • Unit does NOT handle general surgery, Labor & Delivery, or Pediatrics
  • Candidates should be well-rounded in the above specialties aligned with caseload
  • First-time travelers NOT accepted
  • Local candidates accepted within a 60-mile radius

Certifications & Licenses Required

  • South Carolina RN License or Compact License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Radiation badge required (provided by parent company)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (AHA only)
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification) – verify with recruiter/unit
  • Must maintain certifications valid beyond 30 days from start date

Job Responsibilities

  • Preoperative and postoperative patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory OR setting
  • Pre-op duties: patient prep including history review, medication reconciliation, vital signs, EKGs, IV starts, blood sugar checks, administering fluids/antibiotics/medications as ordered
  • Post-op duties: monitor vital signs through anesthesia recovery phases, review discharge instructions, assist with patient discharge via wheelchair
  • Work closely with surgeons, anesthesia, and OR nurses
  • Unit includes Orthopedics (total joints, arthroscopy, hand, shoulder, elbow), Interventional Radiology, and GI procedural cases

Work Environment

  • Unit staffing: approximately 10 RNs and 1 Patient Care Technician
  • Facility includes 20 pre/post-op bays, 2 ORs, 2 GI procedural rooms, 1 VIR procedural room

Scheduling & Time Off

  • Guaranteed hours with allowance for one 10-hour shift call-off every 2 weeks
  • Requests for time off (RTO) must be submitted with application and are subject to facility approval
  • Multiple RTO requests during the 8-13 week contract may be denied

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of work eligibility (I-9 attestation and documentation)
  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or SSN verification
  • Background checks including criminal, sex offender registry, and employment verification for past 7 years
  • Education verification (diploma/transcripts) preferred
  • Annual background checks and federal exclusions screening (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
  • Clinical references (minimum 2) and employment application/resume
  • Radiation badge ordering and tracking required prior to start
  • Physical exam updated annually, including ability to meet physical demands of the role
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and health screenings including:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Hepatitis B titer or vaccination or declination
    • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to start
  • Passport-style photo for badge

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared for a fast-paced environment with diverse surgical specialties
  • Prior travel experience is NOT required for this position
  • Locals within 60 miles are accepted
  • Radiation badge may take 5-7 days to process; candidates cannot start floor duties without it
  • All certifications must be current and valid at start date; renewals or scheduled courses required if expiring soon

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year, specifically in Ambulatory OR settings
  • Experience in the following specialties: Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT (Otolaryngology), Gynecology (GYN), Genitourinary (GU), Endocrinology, Surgical Oncology, Plastics, Robotics, and Total Joints
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification
