NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Roanoke, Virginia

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with experience in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for a travel/contract position. The role involves providing advanced care to premature and critically ill newborns in a 60-bed Level III NICU with both ICU and Intermediate level care.

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, day shifts)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Experience working with neonate patients
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Required Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or a compact state license
  • Pending licenses accepted only if from a non-compact single state license

Clinical Skills & Competencies

  • IV therapy: blood & blood products administration, arterial line management, central line blood draws and care, starting and maintaining IVs, umbilical artery and vein catheter care
  • Medication administration including anti-seizure meds, antibiotics/antivirals, IV vasopressors, steroids, surfactants, and neonatal dosage calculations
  • Respiratory support: Bubble CPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), High Frequency Ventilation, chest tube management, nitric oxide therapy, oscillators, suctioning (ETT, NT), tracheostomy care, ventilator management (AC/PC/SIMV/CPAP/BIPAP/PEEP)
  • Gastrointestinal care: breastfeeding support, colostomy/ileostomy care, feeding methods (bottle, breast, gavage), management of gastroschisis, omphalocele, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tube placement and management, post abdominal surgery care
  • Neurological care: lumbar puncture assistance, intracranial pressure monitoring, neonatal abstinence syndrome, seizure disorders, therapeutic hypothermia, ventricular peritoneal shunts

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Neonates with diagnoses including extreme prematurity (22 weeks+), respiratory distress, meconium aspiration, persistent pulmonary hypertension, TE fistula, diaphragmatic hernia, trisomy 21, cystic hygroma, intraventricular hemorrhage, NEC, skeletal dysplasia, hydrocephalus, volvulus, intestinal failure, hyperglycemia, chronic lung disease, myelomeningocele, seizures
  • Excludes patients requiring ECMO or heart surgery
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: ICU goal 1:2, Intermediate care 1:4
  • Floating within skillset required

Technology & Equipment

  • EPIC charting system experience required
  • Use of high-frequency jet ventilators, oscillators, Artic Sun cooling blankets, positioning aids, infusion pumps, incubators, radiant warmers, phototherapy lights, and bassinets

Additional Requirements

  • Must submit all requests for time off with application
  • Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Locals not accepted; radius restrictions apply
  • Accepts first-time travel nurses

Background & Compliance

  • 7-year background check required within 1 year of start
  • Education verification of highest degree required
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
  • Immunizations or titers required for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B
  • TB testing or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required to complete facility-specific compliance and orientation documents prior to start

This position is ideal for NICU RNs with strong Level III NICU experience who are comfortable managing complex neonatal patients and advanced respiratory and IV therapies in a high-acuity environment. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
