Travel Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit

Location: Huntington, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • 3x12 hour night shifts
  • Strong cardiac skills required
  • Unit: 20-bed step-down unit with all private rooms
  • Patient mix includes pulmonary (pneumonia, COPD, BiPAP/CPAP), cardiac (a-fib, heart failure), neuro (stroke), GI (bleed), and stable post-surgery patients at higher risk of instability
  • Patient ratio typically 4:1, can be 5:1 depending on staffing
  • Unit accepts a combination of med-surg, telemetry, and step-down patients based on bed availability
  • Administration of critical drips such as Amiodarone, Esmolol, Insulin, Lasix, Cardizem, and Nitroglycerin

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Cardiac Stepdown experience within the last year
  • Strong cardiac skills
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during shifts
  • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Background check within 30 days of start; international background check if applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (must include specific substances and confirmation values)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • TB screening (QGold or T-Spot within 6 months, updated annually; chest X-ray if history of positive TB)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis A, B, C
    • Varicella
    • Seasonal Flu vaccine (or approved medical/religious exemption)
    • COVID-19 seasonal vaccine (initial series preferred; declination form required if opting out)

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion of orientation and annual education modules prior to or shortly after start
  • Completion of confidentiality, attestation, and IT access agreements before start
  • N95 fit testing onsite at orientation (male candidates must be clean-shaven)
  • Submission of exemption forms for flu and COVID vaccines if applicable (must be approved prior to start)

Additional Notes

  • Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Performance evaluations required if previously worked with the organization for over 1 year
  • Skills checklist and competency exams required and must be updated annually
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
